How To:Find Creative Commons Images

How do you find images that you can edit, change and use freely on your web site?support-btn-big.jpg

When I first started making a web site I found it very difficult to find images to use. Searching with Google Images brought up many suitable images, but could I legally use them? Free clip art is very limited and not very suitable in many circumstances. Here’s a list of resources I’ve found to find images licensed under Creative Commons. An image licensed under Creative Commons may have the following restrictions - Attribution, Non Commercial, No Derivative Works or Share Alike, so be sure to check out the license on any image you use.

1.Google Advanced Search

On the advanced search page under ‘Usage Rights’ enter:

  • Free to use or share
  • free to use or share, even commercially
  • Free to use, share or modify
  • Free to use, share or modify, even commercially

2.Wikipedia- Creative Commons Page

3.Search Creative Commons Search using Google, Yahoo!, Fickr

4.Every Stock Photo Searches mainly Fickr, MorgueFile and Stock.xchng for images. Thumbnail will take you to a page with details of licensing.

5.Firefox Creative Commons Search Plugins Add a Creative Commons or a Yahoo! Creative Commons search to your Firefox search box

6.Creative Commons Content Directories List of resources for video, images, text and music

7. Image After

Those are good resources! I’ve always just gone to Stock.xchng, but I didn’t know about EveryStockPhoto. Thanks!

Glad it was useful Jonathan. Thanks for stopping by!

That is new for me. I didn’t know that images are protected legally, since all the public information is available all over the world, but that makes complete sense.
