For quite a while I was struggling to make pretty permalinks work. After 2 attempts where I ended up with ‘page not found’ when I changed from the default permalinks I gave up for a while. However not being the sort of person who accepts defeat easily I made another attempt recently. I have no idea why, as far as I know I followed exactly the same procedure this time, but it worked! Great! I checked to make sure that the old structure still worked, so that anyone who had bookmarked my pages could still find them and that internal links worked, and moved on to other things!
All was not as easy as I had assumed. I had used shortened internal links, ?page_id=12 rather than the full address http://…/myblog/?page_id=12, to avoid getting pingbacks in my comments when I referenced an internal link. All was fine until I added a new link in a completely unrelated place. I added a link to an image in a post and suddenly some of my internal links now aquired part of that link at the end! So I had something like this:
http://…./?page_id=12/myblog/upload/2007/08/image.jpg
Very strange!
I’ve tried to find all my internal links and update them to use the new permalinks structure, to avoid this in the future but my apologies to any of my readers who have run into problems accessing any of my pages. I sincerely hope I’ve fixed all the problems.
