I wouldn’t have Internet Explorer anywhere near my Linux installation if I had a choice, but unfortunately too many people still use it, so I have to check that my web designs look OK in it. Don’t get me started on how much time it takes to tweak a design that looks fine in any other browser you could name but is all over the place in IE!
Until recently I was running Windows in a virtual machine on my Sabayon Linux box in order to do this until I found IEs4Linux
IEs4Linux is the simpler way to have Microsoft Internet Explorer running on Linux (or any OS running Wine).
No clicks needed. No boring setup processes. No Wine complications. Just one easy script and you’ll get three IE versions to test your Sites. And it’s free and open source.
It was simple to set up. It needed cabextract to run and popped up with a download link for this,
or get it from the repositories in the usual way.
On a gentoo box type #emerge –search cabextract
or #apt-get install wine cabextract
Then run the script. It will install IE6 automatically and also give you options to install IE5 and IE5.5.
It takes less than 5 minutes to install and ends with a link to run IE.
Detailed instructions for Debian and Ubuntu installation are hereSimplicity itself!

I’m getting ready to set up a Linux box (maybe tomorrow — I wrote about it). Does this setup run the Active X controls? The only reason I ask is because my bank uses it for logging in.
Hi RT
It looks like it supports Active X. I tested it at http://pcpitstop.com/testax.asp and it displayed the test date and time correctly.
IEs4Linux is the best way to do this.
I never knew it supported ActiveX, thats brilliant!
I still will not let internet explorer come close to me!
But you know the tips are actually good and for a moment I felt tempted but I’m hanging on. I cannot subject my linux babe to torture.
hey thanks for the information man! It was really useful.
My friends were always asking about this.
