Need a local copy of WordPress (or Joomla, Drupal, Moodle..) to work on without messing with your server? One that can work from a flash drive so it’s portable or can be easily installed on your hard drive? Thanks to Colin King over at CK Marketing I came across this very easy way. WOS Portable (Web Server on a Stick ) is a free, Open Source application for Windows. Head over to chsoftware.net and download WOS Portable, plus Apache, MySqL, PHPMyAdmin and the packages you’re interested in, TYPO3, Joomla!, Mambo, Wordpress, Moodle, OS Commerce, Drupal, Xoops and more.
Installation is easy and you’ll have a web server plus you’re WordPress installation up and running very quickly. I didn’t even need to set up a database for the WordPress install, it was done automatically.
I won’t put a detailed tutorial here as there’s an excellent one at Colin’s post at CK Marketing. He’s even provided a PDF version of the tutorial!
Have fun!

Thanks for the link Janet, the post is part of an on-going series.

If someone wants more information about that… I have wrote my key notes in order to install that on a MAC.
I thought that it will be impossible in close future to run WordPress from Flash Drive but they are always good programmers who make it possible for us. Thanks to you Janet for this article and Colin King who make it available for all of us for free.
Excellent! I want to try it.
This is an excellent concept, I would love to have a local WP or Joomla install around my neck to use at a moments notice. Thanks for sharing!
Very interesting. Thanks for your nice seo information!
Thanks janet, i’ll try it, i think it’s useful for me.
Portable storage devices like flash drives now play major role in Information Technology. Wordpress is the easiest and instant seo friendly domain developing tool with good CMS.
Interesting application. Now my wordpress is always with me
thx a lot!
dude, thats awesome. I’m always stuck at work without the internet, having a local WP would be great. Nice way to work on some themes or plugins while at work
Interesting application. Now my wordpress is always with me.
ill try this.
Nice one, gonna try it right away hehe
wow! nice article. thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Great work!
This is great, thank a lot!
Solid state hard drives rock! Who could have imagined running and entire OS, and then wordpress on a flash drive. I think hard drives with movable parts will be a thing of the past in the not too far off future. I just love it. Less heat and lower failure rates. Technology rocks.
It is amazing to me how large these flash drives are getting. I think it is only a matter of time before we are seeing 32-64 gig flash drives on the market for under $100 bucks. This kind of portable, tiny storage will be necessary for HD content and other large programs down the line.
I tried this application and I find it very interesting and useful. Thanks for the link.
Really cool stuff. Thanks for the info.
Excellent article, I think I will give this a try myself.
first time i heard it, i tested and its useful
me and usb flash driver never separate eachther
Thanks! I would never have guessed that this capability even existed.
I never knew i could run wp from a flash drive..nice piece of extra knowledge…though i am not a dumby at tech but i found this new.
Hmmmm…I guess I never really thought of using wordpress on a stick before in this way, but I like the ring that this article has to it.
It has a very free way about it. I like the background on your site as well.

I like the background of your site too, thanks for the web solutions by the way, this blog has helped me with some research i needed.
Im liking this idea of a server on a stick, thats for sure. It makes so much sense when you can move things around and experiment without any harm coming to your actual code on the real server. email marketing
This is so cool. Great information I didn’t know that you could do this from a flash drive. Great post!
Create a program folder on my flash drive and copy the Java application to it. I named my program folder Portable.
